“Take simple notes from things you read/watch/hear.”
In a lifetime, we come across many books, many movies, many songs, that influence us, inspire us, and instruct us. The problem is that over a lifetime and with the finiteness of human memory we forget many of their names and what they meant to us. But there are lessons to be learned that are worth remembering, and stories too. In the same way that we bookmark a website that we really like for future reference, we should do the same for older mediums as well.
The next time you read a book, watch a movie/TV show, hear a song/radio program/audio tape, take simple notes from them. It doesn’t have to be complicated. What I’ve tried to do is take note of the author, the title, and a few lessons that I want to remember. The very act of taking a simple note helps you remember it better. Although you may not remember the specifics, you may remember how it made you feel, or what lesson you took from it, or what about it inspired you.
Over time, you will have built a collection of insights you have gained from the mediums you have interacted with. Looking back on them, you can review lessons learned, and have a list to recommend to others as well.
We take photographs so we don’t forget the precious moments in life. Why not take a few basic notes so we don’t forget the precious insights that come out way…
